A long tradition and happy days for employees
If you are planning company visits, please note the following information regarding public holidays.
Austria has a long tradition of public holidays, some of which date back to state events and others to Catholic festivals.
Employees must be given time off on public holidays with full pay compensation. If employees are on job on public holidays, a holiday supplement of 100% of the hourly wage must be paid.
If a holiday falls on a Tuesday or Thursday, employees often ask whether vacation or compensatory time can be taken on the day between the holiday and the weekend. Individual companies generally keep closed on such days, in Austria these are called "Zwickeltage". Many offices and companies are closed on a "Zwickeltag".
Schools are closed from July to September during the summer. Many parents also take time off work and go on vacation during this period. In addition, students have semester breaks in February, Easter holidays at the end of March and beginning of April, Pentecost holidays in May, and Christmas and New Year holidays from December 24th to January 6th.
