A long tradition and happy days for employees
Austria has a long tradition of public holidays, some of which date back to state events and others to Catholic festivals.
Employees must be given time off on public holidays with full pay compensation. If workers are employed on public holidays, a holiday supplement of 100% of the hourly wage must be paid.
If a holiday falls on a Tuesday or Thursday, employees often ask whether vacation or compensatory time can be taken on the day between the holiday and the weekend. Individual companies generally keep closed on such days, in Austria these are called "Zwickeltage".
